What causes fuzz in rovings?

Fuzz results from friction of the fiberglass rovings passing against mechanical guides during the processing of the fiberglass. Fuzz may or may not affect the final mechanical performance of the FRP part but definitely affects the appearance. Fuzz can be reduced by the correct selection of film former and lubricants in the sizing package of the fiberglass.

What gives fiberglass the needed performance in FRP parts?

Performance of FRP parts are determined by the sizing on the fiberglass rovings. The sizing is made up of a film former, lubricant, silane among other things. The correct film former will provide the necessary wet-out and performance characteristics and mechanical strength of the FRP part.

What is wet-out?

Wet-out is sometimes used interchangeably with solubility. Wet-out is the speed and extent to which a fiberglass roving will mix in with a matrix resin. The correct choice of sizing (especially the film former) will determine the proper wet-out. Wet-out of a film former can be characterized by submersing the dried film of the film former in a polar solvent such as acetone and measuring the time and extent that the film dissolves.

In a non-woven mat, how can the binder help improve tensile?

Tensile of a non-woven mat can be affected by several factors including the binder. A binder with good wet-out on the fibers and cross-linking of the polymer will increase the tensile vs. a binder not cross-linked.  Cross-linking can occur as the result of heat or addition of catalyst, depending on the binder.
