Unsung Workhorse

In many ways, adhesives are the “unsung workhorses” of packaging and labeling. Adhesives are typically not visible to a consumer, but serve an important role in the overall success of a product’s package. Having labels adhere to products that are in and out of refrigerators or ice buckets, exposed to repeated water sprays in showers, or exposed to various chemicals is the primary result of successful application of adhesive technology.

At Labelexpo Americas earlier this year, I visited several label substrate suppliers that were showing any number of application-specific label solutions to the market. In virtually every case, adhesive technology was the “glue” that made the offering a viable solution for the application. Even the popular no-label look that is so prevalent on many consumer products is highly dependent on successful application of the right adhesive.

Clearly, there is a lot of science that goes into adhesive technology development and probably a solution for whatever problem might be presented. The key is to clearly understand what is needed and then talk to the experts.
