Meeting the Demand for Pressure Sensitive Labels

I want to dig back a couple of months to an article that appeared in the August 20, 2013 issue of Converting Quarterly e-Newsletter that discussed North American demand for pressure-sensitive labels.

In “North American label market up 2%, says new AWA report ,” Jackie Marolda, vice president and a senior consultant with AWA Alexander Watson Associates, notes that essentially half (49 percent) of the total demand for labels in the North American region is for pressure sensitive labels.  (The North American region is comprised of the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which, together, account for 21 percent of global demand for labels – behind Asia Pacific and Europe.)

Marolda attributes the strong preference for PSAs in the North American market to the flexibility of the pressure-sensitive technology.  Pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs)  “deliver high levels of sophistication in terms of label shape, multi-sensitive technology and accurate, speedy automatic dispensing,” says Marolda. She points out that the preference for pressure-sensitive labels likely will remain as consumer goods manufacturers seek “shelf stand-out” for brands. It also is the dominant choice for changing information print labels, such as price/weight labels for in-store applications.

Although Marolda believes that other label technologies (such as shrink-wrapped labels) will grow at a fast pace, she also predicts continued, if smaller, growth in the market for PSAs.

If the versatility of PSA tack and peel  – providing a range of PSAs from permanent to easily removable to repositionable – are a driving factor in this technology’s popularity, then the adhesives manufacturers who offers the full array of PSA products is best positioned to meet market demand for PSAs. Further, the manufacturer that can easily customize a PSA product to specific requirements might be best equipped to meet customer requirements for the PSA that offers the ideal characteristics for a given application.

Franklin Adhesives & Polymers prides itself on both its broad line of existing adhesives and its capabilities in working with customers to develop the right adhesive for specific applications.  We have the technical expertise to create the right adhesive for the job – and more, we are willing to put our resources to work for our customers.

The right PSA product can help you, as a label manufacturer, meet your customers’ needs and take full advantage of the huge demand for pressure-sensitive labels in North America.
