Most of you have taken steps, large or smaller, to reduce the negative impact of your operations upon the environment and produce greener goods. And you likely know about the MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry) Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM program, a rigorous certification program that evaluates products and materials for human health, environmental health and recyclability.
T
he Cradle to Cradle Certified program, administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, evaluates products and materials against comprehensive criteria in five different areas: material health, material reutilization, energy use, water stewardship, and social responsibility. It’s not easy to get the certification, but it’s very valuable to the company seeking certification and to that company’s customers: Certified products are eligible for LEED points as an Environmentally Preferable Material in USGBC’s LEED for Homes Rating System; under the Innovation in Design category; and under the Pilot Credit 43: Certified Products.
Of special note to those of you who are office furniture manufacturers, you also can use the MBDC’s toxicity assessment toward BIFMA’s level certification.
Franklin Adhesives and Polymers is a leader in the development of environmentally friendly adhesives for a number of industries – including furniture and wood components manufacturing and wood components. We are especially proud of a recent innovation, just coming to market: Titebond Quickset 1000 FR, a PVA adhesive ideal for use in the manufacture of office furniture and installation of acoustic panels. We think you’ll be both surprised and pleased to learn that Titebond Quickset 1000 FR meets both Cradle-to-Cradle Certified requirements (toxicity level, yellow) and passes UL723 and ASTM E84 testing for surface burning characteristics of building materials. It would be difficult for you to find another high-performance adhesive that is both fire-rated and MBDC certified.
