Franklin Adhesives & Polymers' New Advantage EP-940 Offers Big Advantage in Bonding Treated Wood

There are many ways to treat lumber for higher durability. And now, there is a new way to bond the treated wood: Advantage EP-940, a powerful new adhesive from Franklin Adhesives & Polymers, a division of Franklin International.

Advantage EP-940 is an emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI) system developed to bond treated lumber and other wood substrates that are difficult to glue. For example, it bonds ponderosa pine, bamboo, various imported woods, wood-plastic composite, laminated veneer lumber and a variety of proprietary treated lumber.

The newest Advantage wood adhesive meets ASTM D-5751-99 wet use for laminate joints in non-structural lumber on some types of wood. In addition, it has no added formaldehyde and qualifies for LEED credits.

Beyond its ability to bond a variety of treated lumber products, Advantage EP-940 offers numerous characteristics for higher performance. Less foam and higher spreader stability speed up production and improve bond quality. Reduced conditioning time over PVA-based adhesives also speeds up production. And, Advantage EP-940 offers excellent water, heat and solvent resistance.

This two-component adhesive offers a longer pot life than other EPI adhesives for less waste of mixture. Advantage EP-940 is combined with Hardener 400, a polymeric isocyanate at 12-15 parts Hardener 400 to 100 parts emulsion.

“We are extremely excited over the possibilities Advantage EP-940 brings to our market,” said Jaye Schroeder, vice president, wood adhesives market development, North America. “This new adhesive appears to be the solution for many difficult-to-bond substrates – including plastic lumber. We look forward to working individually with customers to help them solve their most challenging bonding needs in the wood products plant.”
