Multibond MX-90

Multibond MX-90

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Multibond MX-90 is a one-part, cross-linking PVA that was designed for hot pressing. The polymer is more forgiving than many other pva cross-linking systems manufactured by Franklin. Multibond MX-90 can achieve HPVA Type II bonds and is formulated to help bleed through resistance. Like all adhesives, proper gluing practices are needed to achieve stated performance.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Tolerances: Gluing stock should be uniform in thickness. Variation in thickness should not exceed ± 0.005 inches.  Sanding to thickness should be performed using higher than 50 grit abrasives. For products that cannot be uniform in thickness, greater amounts of spread and pressure will be required.

Spread: Generally, 35-50 pounds per 1,000 square feet of glue line (6-9 wet mils or 180-260 ft²/gal) is adequate.  (The greater the thickness variation and roughness of the substrates, the greater the need for higher spreads.)

Assembly Time: Open and closed assembly times will vary depending on the conditions of use.  In general, cooler ambient conditions will lead to longer open and closed assembly times. Multibond MX-90 features a polymer that permits a pre-curing glue line to be reactivated with the right combination of spread, heat and pressure. (It is more difficult to reactivate a low spread. If not enough glue is applied, reactivation may not be possible and in plant testing is required to determine limits.)

Pressure: Pressure is dependent upon the species or material to be glued. Direct contact of the gluing surfaces must be achieved to obtain maximum strength. Suggested pressures for various substrates are; high pressure laminates 30-80 psi; solid core stock 100-150 psi; all veneer constructions 150-250 psi. Rougher veneer will require higher press pressures. Good surface contact is required to get best performance. (Performance testing of manufactured parts is recommended to ensure satisfactory results.)

Suggested Hot Press Cycle: The recommended press temperature is 230-250° F (110-122° C). Press time is dependent on a number of factors including press temperature and the distance to the deepest glue line. If hot pressing hardwood plywood that may have dried adhesive before the hot press cycle, more time, pressure and heat will be needed to achieve proper bonding. If the spreads are too low, the adhesive will not reflow.  (Performance testing of bonds for type II performance will be necessary to find limits)

Press Time: Press time is dependent on the adhesive used, gluing stock type, moisture content of the stock
and environmental conditions. This hot press schedule is provided as a recommended starting point. In plant testing is recommended especially for temperatures and substrate thicknesses beyond this chart.

STORAGE AND HANDLING

Shelf Life: Six months at 70° F. Store in closed containers. Protect adhesive from freezing. If product has been frozen, contact Franklin Technical Service for instructions.

This product can thicken with age or exposure to high temperatures. Agitation of the tote or drum is
recommended before use under these conditions.

Note: Discoloration of wood veneer products occurs occasionally. This phenomenon is very infrequent and ranges in appearance, color and may vary with the species of the veneer. Discoloration may appear during or after the manufacturing process. Among other things, environmental conditions in some manufacturing plants can contribute to discoloration. If veneer discoloration occurs, our representatives are prepared to visit and assist you in attempting to identify the causes of the staining and possible solutions. Because such discoloration is attributable to conditions beyond our control, Franklin International can assume no responsibility of liability for any discolorations that might occur.
